Ruby Crystal Physical Properties
Ruby Crystal Color
We specialize in Natural Color Ruby Crystals:
Red-Purple Ruby Crystals
Red-Pink Ruby Crystals
Red Ruby Crystals
Ruby occurs in nature as pinkish-red to red to purplish-red corundum. In some unusual geologic settings, a strongly colored host rock can make an attractive color contrast with its embedded ruby crystals making the ruby containing rock an attractive lapidary material for making jewelry & other collectable handcrafted items such as mineral spheres. A popular example of this is ruby in zoisite with deep red ruby crystals in a bright green zoisite matrix. Be sure to see our handcrafted ruby in zoisite jewelry! Another popular example of lapidary grade ruby containing rock is ruby in green fuchsite - see a selection of collectable ruby in fuchsite spheres.
Ruby Crystal Hardness
Ruby is a very durable mineral with a hardness of 9 on Moh's hardness scale! Due to its high hardness, ruby is often mined in alluvial geologic settings where the more durable minerals have been concentrated by erosion and watershed.
Ruby Crystal Habit
Ruby commonly forms as both tabular crystals and prismatic crystals terminated by basal pinacoids. Ruby often occurs as tapering
hexagonal pyramidal crystals with a barrel-shaped form. The prismatic faces of ruby crystals frequently have deep horizontal striations.
Ruby Crystal Chemical Composition
Ruby is an aluminum oxide: Al2O3. The color in ruby is due to trace impurities of chromium.
Ruby Crystal Occurance
Ruby occurs characteristically
in aluminum-rich and silica-poor rocks. Ruby occurs as an accessory
mineral in metamorphic rocks derived from aluminous or carbonate sediments
such as crystalline limestones and marbles, mica schists and gneisses. Ruby crystals are also found in contact zones between igneous rocks and limestones.
Ruby also appears in silica-poor light colored igneous rocks such as
desilicated pegmatites, syenites and nepheline syenites.
Due to the high hardness of ruby and its chemical inertness, ruby crystals often
encountered in eluvial and alluvial deposits.
Ruby Crystal Metaphysical Properties
Ruby is said to inspire love, and to enhance creativity, wisdom
and spirituality. Ruby crystals are also said to give confidence, self-esteem and courage,
and to stimulate leadership qualities. Ruby is also said to have been helpfull in treating heart and circulatory disease.
Ruby Crystal Historical Information
The name ruby originated from the Latin word ruber meaning red. Ruby is among the oldest gems known to man, dating back many
thousands of years. The ruby has always been held in very high regard, and the ancient Sanskrit names for ruby translate as king of precious stones or leader of precious stones! Ruby was in the 'Breastplate of Judgement' of Aaron, described in the bible (Exodus: xxviii, 15-30).
Throughout history ruby crystals have been attributed with having a great
variety of beneficial properties. Ruby was said to preserve health and give
invulnerability from wounds, and to guarantee that
one's status and posessions would never be taken. The wearing of a ruby
was said to signify manhood, nobility and valor in a man, and pride & passion
in a woman.
