These natural opals are popularly known as Ethiopian opals or Welo Opals. The Welo opal is completely natural and has proven to be just as hard and stable as fine Brazilian opal, and just as hard and stable as the opals used in fine Australian opal jewelry. The body color of the Welo opal ranges from golden to orange-brown, and also from milky white to colorless to blue, and the transparency varies from translucent to crystal clear. The transparent Welo opals with color play are sometimes called jelly opal gemstones when they have a gelatinous look. The Transparent Welo opals with fine color play are also sometimes called crystal opal gemstones. Both have beautiful flashes of color inside.
