This biotite schist with sillimanite matrix specimen has several reddish-purple almandine garnets (also known as almandite exposed on its surfaces. Some of the garnets have sheared surfaces and some show terminations with rounded dodecahedral form that was modified due to their formation within a biotite mica schist host rock. The garnets are fractured and they are translucent to semi-transparent.

This large size decorator mineral specimen has a matrix composed of black biotite mica intergrown with long blade-like chatoyant sillimanite. There are several large reddish-purple almandine garnets (also known as almandite) exposed on its surfaces, each garnet measures from 2 inches to 3 inches across! The garnets are fractured and they are translucent to semi-transparent. There is about 30% chatoyant sillimanite intergrown with the biotite mica matrix. This unusual sphere was ground and polished in the U.S.A. It consists mainly of black biotite mica and dark brown chatoyant sillimanite, and it also has a purple-red almandine garnet measuring over 2.5" exposed on the sphere's surface. The rough material that this sphere was made from was mined near Itabira in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This is a great decorator or collector sphere.
