The garnets are fractured and they are translucent to semi-transparent. There is about 30% chatoyant sillimanite intergrown with the biotite mica matrix. The interior is completely covered with amethyst crystals that appear to have formed in 2 separate episodes of crystalization; first as larger 0.4" to 0.6" diameter lilac colored crystals, which were later partially to completely covered by 0.2" to 0.5" lilac colored amethyst crystals. The result is a rounded appearance that, at first glance, almost looks botryoidal (see close-up photo). It truly is very unique. Several 1.0" to 4.0" long translucent calcite crystals formed on top of the amethyst crystals. Some of these calcite crystals are partially to completely bi-terminated.

The color is best seen when this material is polished, or when wet (the photo at left was taken while wet). In its natural dry state this rough has a dull gray blue color. This superior grade piece of lapidary rough would make a great specimen of natural color blue aventurine quartz just as it is, although it could also yield many spheres, slabs, or a beautiful large carving with plenty of scraps left over for making cabochon gems.
