This rare quartzoid decorator specimen is completely natural - just as it was found within the earth! It is composed of naturally terminated smoky quartz crystals with very dark natural color - they are so dark that they appear to be black. The smoky quartz shows brilliant vitreous luster on multiple parallel and stepped pyramidal terminations, many do show some abrasions and most of which are in very good condition. This naturally terminated smoky quartz specimen has 4-sided terminations standing up from the matrix, but these are actually the juncture of double-ended (bi-terminated) bi-pyramids with no prismatic faces. The c-axis of the crystals are parallel to the matrix surface so the "4-sided terminations" standing up from the matrix are actually the juncture of the terminations of the two 6-sided pyramids. The mineralogical term for this bi-pyramidal form of quartz without prismatic faces is "quartzoid". This is a great specimen to fool a geologist with at first glance, since the form of the quartz's 4-sided crystal "tips" look more like black cubic flourite crystals! The interior is completely covered with amethyst crystals that appear to have formed in 2 separate episodes of crystalization; first as larger 0.4" to 0.6" diameter lilac colored crystals, which were later partially to completely covered by 0.2" to 0.5" lilac colored amethyst crystals. This large specimen of natural cats eye quartz was mined in Bahia, Brazil in 1996. It is completely natural, with no treatments of any kind. The cats eye quartz has some white quartz lenses intergrown within the gray cat's eye quartz. This specimen has a brown oxidized outer surface with fresh surfaces showing gray actinolite fibers encased by quartz. This material has very nice silver color chatoyancy when properly oriented and polished. This cats eye quartz specimen is lapidary grade and would yield a 4 inch diameter sphere with material left over for making a fine 2 inch diameter sphere and lots of cats eye quartz cabochon gems.

This long slender natural tourmaline crystal appears to be black, but when held up to a light this rare quality tourmaline actually has very dark green color at one end that grades into dark brown in the middle and then into very dark brown and finally black near the tip. This dark green tourmaline crystal measures 4.35 inches long, and it is naturally terminated with flawless gem-grade transparency in the green and brown portions when illuminated!
