Alexandrite is the very rare color change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Under daylight, alexandrite has green color and it changes to reddsish-purple hues when viewed under incandescent light.

Alexandrite was first discovered in 1831 in an emerald mining region of the Ural Mountains in the Soviet Union. Alexandrite is said to have been first discovered there on the day that the Russian czar Alexander II came of age. The mineral was named "alexandrite" in his honor by the mineralogist Nordenskjold. It is an interesting coincidence that the Russian national colors are green and red.

A significant deposit of gem-grade alexandrite was discovered in Brazil in 1989, and then another significant find of gem-grade alexandite occurred a little more than a decade later in India which included a large amount of cats eye alexandrite with very good chatoyancy.
